Peppermint Patties
In Patty Jewett, neighbors believe they play a role in creating the kind of community they want to live in. In 2013, with an abundance of young families moving into the neighborhood, moms organized a children's play group called the Peppermint Patties. With a goal of fostering friendly and loving connections with local kids, the group met regularly with trips to Tasty Freeze, Taylor Elementary School playground, and Fire Station 2. Peppermint Patties started the Halloween Parade and the Spring Egg Hunt, which now take place annually. To contact the Peppermint Patties, email info@pattyjewettneighborhood.org.
Porchfest
In 2016, while stuffing eggs for the annual Spring Egg Hunt, a group of neighbors discussed the idea of staging bands on neighbor's porches for a small, local music festival to be enjoyed by Patty Jewett residents. The inspiration came from the 9th Street Bluegrass Jam a neighbor's friend hosted in Midtown Atlanta, GA. Each September, PJNA now hosts the Patty Jewett Porchest, a celebration of music, movement and community. Played by residents who live in Colorado Springs, the event draws thousands from around the region to enjoy free live and local music, a variety of food truck offerings and a whole lot of boogie'n on down. Pocket Park
In true Patty Jewett spirit, 2019 brought the mobilization to reimagine the pocket park that runs along the Shooks Run Trail just south of Good Neighbors Meeting House. In partnership with the City of Colorado Springs, neighbors developed a master plan for the area, hosted public meetings to seek input and raised nearly $110,000, to improve the space. In July 2020, neighbors cut the ribbon on a new 2,000 square foot playground, tree plantings, and repavement trail system. Today, neighbors are working on phase 2 of the initiative which will host public art in the area.
